Fund-Raising Walk, Sunday 3rd August 2014

Car Share from WARREN HALL Car Park

Depart Warren Hall at 10.00am to begin the walk at Cheriton Village Hall at 10.30am. This will ensure we have time to enjoy the scenery AND return to ‘The Flower Pots’ for Lunchtime refreshments (food orders taken til 1.45 on Sundays, open until 3.00pm).

In deference to the heat-wave when going to press, this walk will take in not one, but two rural pubs, each with centuries tradition of reviving the weary traveller. THIS ROUTE WAS MADE FOR WALKING.

Dist: 6 . miles in total.

Route: A circular walk with range of scenery including extensive views over harvested arable land of mid-Hampshire. We begin very near the Source of the River Itchen and follow it’s course down towards Alresford. We cross water meadows to the Itchen Way then have a short climb up onto the downs to join up with the King’s Way . The Tichborne Arms offers a short break before rising up again onto the downs to join the South Downs Way and stroll back down into the ancient village of Cheriton. (Battle 1644)

Terrain: The whole route is on public rights of way. Light walking shoes should suffice. The river valley may be wet if we’ve experienced recent summer downpours but the downs are fast-draining chalk.

This month’s free drink—iced water this time—goes to the first walker to tell me:

Why is it named The King’s Way and is there any association with Cheriton?
